ARRESTS at Appleby Horse Fair have fallen by nearly half, officials say.
Fifty fewer people have so far been arrested, down to 60 from 110 in 2009.
A spokesman for the Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group for the fair (MASCG) said the figure suggested the proactive policing operation was helping to reduce violence and anti-social behaviour to make it a safer and more enjoyable event.
"Friday and Saturday are traditionally the busiest days of the fair and the final remaining visitors are now leaving the licensed campsites north of Appleby," said the spokesman.
The number of gipsies and travellers attending the fair was down by around seven per cent compared to last year’s figures.
A total of around 1,400 caravans were counted on the encampments in Eden on Saturday, compared with around 1,500 last year.
